Maintaining a healthy weight is important for your overall wellbeing, as well as lowering the risk of different diseases, conditions and cancers associated with being overweight.

Many individuals in the UK struggle with their weight. In fact, one in every four adults are obese (a term to describe a person who's very overweight, with a lot of body fat).

What’s involved in the programme?

The programme has a stepped approach. This means each week you will build on the last as you achieve your goals.

The first six sessions are structured where each week covers a new topic. The following sessions can be tailored to your individual needs.

The MyWeightMatters programme focuses on the following areas which have helped thousands of people in Essex lose weight for good:

  • A portion counting system.
  • Healthy balanced diet.
  • Become more active.
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy techniques to help people deal with false hunger ‘triggers’. 

How do you know if you’re overweight?

According to the NHS, men with a waist size of 94cm or more and women with a waist size of 80cm or more are more likely to develop obesity-related health problems.

But the most commonly used method to determine whether a person is overweight is by using a body mass index (BMI) calculator. A BMI measures whether you’re a healthy weight for your weight, height, age, sex, ethnic group (optional), and activity level. 

Generally speaking a BMI of:

  • 18.5 to 24.9 means you're a healthy weight.
  • 25 to 29.9 means you're overweight.
  • 30 to 39.9 means you're obese.
  • 40 or above means you're severely obese.

Black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups

According to an NHS resource: “black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups have a higher risk of developing some long-term (chronic) conditions, such as type 2 diabetes.”

These adults with a BMI of:

  • 23 or more are at increased risk.
  • 27.5 or more are at high risk.

Whilst a BMI score is generally a good indication of whether someone is a healthy weight, it’s worth remembering that people who are very muscular can have a high BMI without much fat, which may give a false sense of their weight. Please contact your doctor for further advice if you are unsure.
