A sleep story is exactly what it says - a story that helps you to get to sleep. Bedtime stories are often assumed to only be for children - but a story read in a soothing voice can help anybody drift off to sleep, regardless of age.

So, why else should you try a sleep story?

It’s effortless

Instead of glueing your eyes to a screen (simply press play on the sleep story and leave your device by the side) or holding a book, you can lay down comfortably and just listen.

It’s a welcome distraction from daily life

A story is a great way to unwind and focus on something completely different, allowing your mind to unwind from daily thoughts and potential stresses.

It shows your taking sleep seriously

Sleep is essential for both our physical and mental health, trying out new techniques for a better night’s sleep is a positive step towards prioritising your own sleep, and therefore your own health - go you!

It allows you to get into the right mindset for sleep

Like with anything, the correct mindset usually leads to a more successful outcome - in this case, that outcome is sleep. Clinical psychologist and specialist in treating insomnia, Dr. Steve Orma, explains:

“There’s a paradox to sleep, in that it comes when you’re not trying. When you try to sleep, your mind monitors your efforts, which then keeps you awake. Instead, have the intention of relaxing and letting go. The first step in getting a good night’s sleep is being in the right mindset.

"If you’re tired, relaxed and ready for sleep, you will automatically fall asleep after 10 to 20 minutes. This is why doing something calming before bed will help prepare you for sleep.”

You can find plenty of sleep stories on YouTube, such as the one linked below.
