We’ve all been there. We promise ourselves we’ll get up early for a run or do a home workout at lunchtime - but then that time approaches and we put it off again.

This is one of many reasons why we advise having a workout partner!

Motivation

A workout partner can provide you with that extra motivation to start, continue and keep up with your exercise regimes.

If you cancel a workout, you’re not only letting yourself down but you’ll be letting down another person. This mentality can help you to stay on track with your workout.

Emotional Support

Whilst a workout partner can help you to show up, the continued support and words of encouragement are just as vital. Whether it’s just one more rep or running that bit faster, you may be able to reach your goals even easier alongside someone else.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen found that “...emotional social support from the new sports companion was the most effective. Thus, it is more important to encourage each other than doing the actual activity together."

By teaming up with someone else you can benefit from their own experience and knowledge - and potentially teach you some new exercises you haven’t tried before! Just be careful not to take any advice from anyone that’s unqualified.

Financial savings

It's clear that we can benefit physically from a workout partner but there could be financial gain too! There's often couple/group/guest deals to be taken advantage of at gyms and leisure centres. You can also go halves on equipment to create your own mini-gym too!

Friendly competition

A Michigan State University researcher found that “choosing a partner who you perceive to be a better performer than you could increase your workout time and intensity by as much as 200%” - so be sure to choose wisely for personal gains!

Bonding

Aside from the mental and physical benefits of exercise, it can also be a great opportunity to catch up with a friend or loved one. And research suggests that it can even strengthen your relationship when participating in exciting activities or challenges.

If you don’t have the support of someone else for your workouts, remember that we are always here to support you on the road to a healthier and happier lifestyle.
